Meta data is often defined as ‘data about data

Quite simply, meta data is information about one or more features of data.

It can include the following information:

  • How the data was created
  • Who created it
  • What standards were used
  • When it was created
  • Where it was located at the time it was created

An example of meta data is used in web pages, in the form of meta tags. Meta tags are descriptions of the web page's content. Search engines use this data.

All data, including meta data is growing at an alarming rate; the management of all types of data is becoming a highly skilled process.
